The aesthetic criteria that match the ideal
of beauty and the harmony of bodily and facial features have changed
throughout centuries, but the care over better looks has always
remained present in people’s lives. In modern society, the desire
to change our appearance to meet the criteria of beauty and attractiveness
is more and more strongly manifested; feeling and looking better
makes us more satisfied and stronger in coping with every day
life. There is an increasing number of different face and body
care products, but it is still aesthetic surgery that most courageously
and radically turns back time, thus making part of man’s infinite
longing for eternal youth and beauty come true.
The modern taste of the Western cultural circle dictates keeping
a more or less slim figure and meeting the recognizable criteria
of beauty and attractiveness of not only woman’s, but also man’s
face and body. Today, aesthetic surgery is therefore most developed
in those countries, in which the individual’s bodily or facial
appearence has a direct impact on his or her professional success.
The selection of not only actors, but also managers, representatives
or employees of all profiles has become so strict and demanding
today, that the appearance of an individual is no longer his or
her personal or secondary matter. The looks, therefore, have a
profound influence on one’s employment chances and height of salary,
but also on the perception of her/his friendliness, intelligence
or success in life. „Good looks“ are considered with an equal
importance as the already traditional factors: education, innovativeness,
intelligence and loyalty to the company.
Aesthetic surgery helps the people who are not satisfied with
their appearance, that is, those, who want to look better, prettier
or more attractive. Aesthetic surgery has undergone accelerated
development exactly during the last two decades. It improves the
appearance marred by various causes. The procedures are divided
into two basic groups: a group of procedures which try to restore
a former condition, and a group of procedures that change one’s
appearance in order to correct her/his natural features. Hence,
aesthetic surgery includes interventions for the ageing process,
corrections of the unwanted after-effects of natural physiological
conditions (changes on the breasts and bellies of the women who
have delivered and breast-fed babies, changes after extensive
reduction diets) or permanent removal of localized lumps of fatty
tissue. It offers optimal solutions for various congenital or
acquired deformities, and eliminates and alleviates the after-effects
of various injuries.
The particularity of aesthetic surgery lies in the fact that the
indication for a surgical procedure is based on one’s own subjective
need and dissatisfaction with her/his appearance.
