Modern generations, especially individuals from the socially exposed media or business circles, are more and more demanding of their appearance. Giving special attention to appearance, looking good, radiating self-confidence and energy, are highly desirable characteristics in most modern professions. Motivation to undergo aesthetic surgery is undoubtedly dissatisfaction with one's own appearance. Every year, millions of people throughout the world decide to undergo an aesthetic procedure to change their looks or try to look younger, using the possibilities of aesthetic surgery as a way towards changes in their professional, family or personal life.
As the skin around the eyes loses elasticity, the eyelids change their appearance, sometimes already at midlife. Excess skin, wrinkles, skin bags and fat pockets make one look old and tired. Sagging upper eyelid skin can sometimes hang over the rim of the eyelids and impair vision, whereas fat tissue deforms the eyelid and creates puffiness of the lower, upper or both eyelids. Eyelid plastic surgery, blepharoplasty, restores, to a certain extent, freshness and rested look to the whole face, and especially the part around the eyes. After the surgery, the eyes appear bigger and their natural beauty becomes more prominent. The procedure, however, is also indicated in younger persons with hereditary eyelid bags.
Eyelid surgery includes procedures to remove excess upper eyelid skin and wrinkles from the lower eyelid as well as fat tissue from both. The procedure lasts from one to two hours, depending on its scope. The incision on the upper eyelid is made about ten millimetres above the lash line, in a natural skin fold, and on the lower lid a bit closer to the lash line.
Swelling and bruising usually disappear in 5 - 7 days; after that, normal every-day activities may be resumed. Early results are already visible in one week, and the final ones in 6-12 months. Immediately after the surgery, scars are scarcely visible and can be easily covered by discreet make-up, and they normally cannot be noticed at all a few months after the surgery.
